“See The U.S.A.?”

“This is a great time for people to explore America. A lot of people haven’t seen many parts of America,” Mnuchin said.

The Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department, quoted above, I regularly think of as Munchkin. He seems often to have just as much common sense as the little people in the Wizard of Oz. But yesterday he outdid himself with his suggestion that as Dinah Shore sang years ago, “see the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet, American is asking you to call.” I wonder if he is worried about how low the gasoline prices are going. The photo on the left is the gas price from May 2019 in our neighborhood. The photo on the right shows the prices today. Gasoline is sitting unsold. This is bad for the oil companies, I know, so Mnuchin wants to help them out.

With advice like this coming from the top of the federal government, I suppose some people will actually plan road trips to see the country. Spring break vacationers from Florida spread the virus all over our country. Drivers doing such trips this summer ought to guarantee that any quiet spots currently free of the virus will have it delivered to their door steps.

As I say almost every day “you can’t make this stuff up.”

Peace to you all from the locked down State of Connecticut, third hardest hit state in the country. I suggest you don’t put it on your summer itinerary.

  2. I didn’t realize Connecticut had been hit so hard. As you know Washington reported the first case in the country but seems to have leveled off. We are now on a phased in plan of reopening, though still very limited. I love a good road trip as much as anyone but now is not the time. I’ll continue to listen to our governor and the local experts.

  4. That price of $2.36, is that for one gallon? A gallon of petrol here costs around £6. That’ s $7.41. That is enough to put me off considering long road trips even when there is no virus. But given the fact there is no virus vaccination, and deaths are still widespread, the advice to travel around America on holiday sounds like a bad joke from a poor comedian.

    1. Yes for a gallon. It is cheap, but who cares. No places to go. And Mnuchin is a very entitled s.o.b. and uses his influence to his advantage, totally out of touch with those of us who pay his salary.

  5. I liked the idea of virtual tours of well-known museums and historical sights. They cost nothing and were virus free. I was not successful with them. Maybe I didn’t click on the right spots, but none that I looked at were worth the time and effort.

  6. Our gas prices in California are some of the most expensive in the country. I just bought gas last week for $3.09 per gallon. It was up to $4.00 per gallon before COVID. At first, I thought the AAA information was an actual sign, and I wondered about the psychology of seeing what the price of gas was last month vs. today. I have to think it would be a feeling like you were getting a deal. On the other hand, if the prices went up, I think I’d feel discouraged knowing it was considerably cheaper last month. We all want a bargain.

  10. An interesting comment about travelling, Elizabeth. I assume it was intended to be along the lines of buy American i.e. travel at home and spend your money here in your own country. That line of thought makes sense when it is safer to start getting out and about again.
