As I was replacing a shoelace in my tennis shoe I reflected on the times Zoe would chase me around snapping at my shoelaces, tempting targets. She has moved on to greener pastures and now has an appetite for eyeglasses and pens. After replacing three pair of glasses I finally established the habit of placing them on the mantlepiece whenever I don’t need them to read. Pens have proved a more challenging target. If I set one down in a distracted moment, the next sound I hear is of crunching plastic. The time I have to grab the remnant before she frees the ink cartridge is crucial! Thankfully she isn’t interested in consuming any of these items, preferring to destroy them.
Each of our dogs seemed to have different favorite chew targets. One went for leather, chomping on the Bible cover. Another was fascinated with cords and especially liked out of the way ones under beds. One dog remained fixated on rodent poop despite our constant scoldings. Fortunately all of them have been quick to snarf up any bits that fall to the floor while we are cooking. Except for mushrooms. Somehow they all have drawn the line on mushrooms!
We have been lucky with Ollie, as he has never chewed up or destroyed anything, not even once. His soft toys are occasionally chewed vigourously, but only a little, not enough to ruin them. But I don’t mind that, as they are his toys. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

He is a much better behaved dog than any we have had. I think it goes down to the owner!

A good aversion to have for dogs so they avoid them in the wild!

Too funny. I missed your humor during my sojourn for grief and illness.

Dear old Pickle took many years to get over her puppy love of chewing. I still have gardening shoes and a file binder with her toothmarks. My stepson’s dog, whe we had for six months during her first year while he was away overseas, was seen running around with teeth protruding from the side of her mouth and hubby was horrified that she’d found something tough enough to break her teeth. In the event, it turned out to be his dentures that she’d stolen from the shelf beside the sofa. He’d only just bonded with those dentures and he’s never really taken to their replacement.
We’ve been lucky with the two terrier crosses we have now. They have never taken to chewing shoes or slippers, and even seem to know the difffernce between the twins’ toys and their own!

I love the story of the teeth. That would have stopped me in my tracks.

My sweet little Benji has been known to destroy glasses as well so I try my best to keep them away from his paws and teeth. The bigger problem has been scratching and I am still working on that. Still, don’t we love them? 😸🐶

I wonder what it is about glasses. Maybe they taste like us!

Or maybe it’s because they know they shouldn’t have them, and it gets our attention!

She does take them quite sneakily! Perhaps you are right about “forbidden fruit.”

I haven’t had a dog since I was a boy, which was so long ago, I don’t remember what she chewed on. It might have been the back of my head, as I’ve had a warped sense of humor ever since.

We have six dog outside and 3 puppies. One thing that I don’t like whichever of them does it is chewing slippers. I bought a shoerack outside for the slippers we use in the garden but still they could reach it. We put them now at the ledge of our French windows.🥰

For a minute I thought you had put the shoerack outside just for them! LOL I love the ledge solution.

One of our dogs used to rip his dog beds to shreds. Those suckers aren’t cheap either.

Wow. Our dogs have never had beds. I bet they would tear them up given half a chance.

It’s more a puppy thing.

Our second dog, Barney, would go after our kids’ underwear. This taught them to put away their clothes.

A friend had a beagle who roamed the neighborhood and brought back underwear from clothes lines near by.

And that sums up dogs. They are wonderful, each in their own way.

You need to get the manufacturers to make a “mushroom flavoured” whatever 🙂

We always picked the ones in the litters that were the most active. I guess we chose right!
